(Santiago, 15 March 2018) – The Philippine Embassy in Chile as present Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS) recently held its final socio-cultural and sports activity as ACS Chair by organizing a friendly bowling tournament at the La Florida Center, Vicuña.
The bowling tournament served as an afternoon of friendly competition and camaraderie for officials, staff and families of the Philippine, Indonesian, Malaysian Thai and Vietnamese Embassies, as well an opportunity to discuss future ACS activities and reinforce the strong ASEAN bond between each member. Trophies and a gift pack were awarded to the winning players and team.
The activity also served as the Philippine Embassy’s welcome to the new Ambassador of Vietnam H.E. Nguyon Ngoc Son and newly-arrived officials of the Embassies of Malaysia and Indonesia, who were participating in their first-ever ACS sports event.
The Philippine Embassy is scheduled to turn over its Chairmanship of the ACS to Thailand at the end of March 2018. END
PRESIDENT DUTERTE’S SPECIAL ENVOY H.E. LINGLINGAY F. LACANLALE ATTENDS THE INAUGURATION OF CHILEAN PRESIDENT SEBASTIAN PIÑERA

Special Envoy Linglingay F. Lacanlale conveys the President’s message to H.E. Chilean President Sebastian Piñera
(Valparaiso, 11 March 2018) – As a sign and gesture of the strong partnership between the Philippines and Chile, and as part of the Philippine government’s efforts to increase its presence in the South American region, Special Envoy of President Duterte and Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs H.E. Linglingay F. Lacanlale attended the Official Inauguration of Chilean President-elect Sebastian Piñera held in Santiago and Valparaiso on 10-11 March 2018.
In a preceding meeting held at the Palacio de la Moneda, Special Envoy Lacanlale conveyed President Duterte’s best wishes to former President Bachelet and thanked her for her support for the Philippines. In response, President Bachelet conveyed her regards to the Philippine President and echoed the expression of gratitude for the mutual support between the two countries during her tenure.
President Piñera’s inauguration was held at the Congreso Nacional in Valparaiso and culminated in the symbolic transfer of the sash bearing the country’s national colors (white, blue and red) from former President Bachelet to Piñera.
Special Envoy Lacanlale delivered President Duterte’s congratulatory message and best wishes to President Piñera, who in response equally thanked President Duterte and the Philippine delegation for their greetings. President Piñera also expressed his interest to know more about the shared Hispanic heritage between the Philippines and Chile—asking in good humor if Spanish is still widely spoken in the Philippines.
In a speech following the inauguration, new Minister of Interior Andrés Chadwick spoke of the Piñera administration’s desire to continue working with foreign governments as “brothers and friends.” He also highlighted “President Piñera’s gratitude to foreign delegations who took the time to send official representatives to witness his inauguration and personally congratulate him.”
Special Envoy Lacanlale held pull-aside discussions with Chilean Vice Foreign Minister Edgardo Riveros, New Zealand Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Fletcher Tabuteau, and UK Minister of State for Europe and the Americas Alan James Carter Duncan. She also met with a number of resident Ambassadors and non-resident Ambassadors assigned in Chile.

PHILIPPINE EMBASSY AND ASEAN EMBASSIES HARVEST ORGANIC VEGETABLES IN TAKII FARM CHILE

(Santiago, 10 February 2018) – The Philippine Embassy in Chile, in close coordination with the Vietnamese Embassy, led the ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS) in harvesting organic produce at the Semillas Takii Farm in the Chilean City of Paine. The activity was organized as part of the trade and socio-cultural activities of the ACS, which is presently chaired by the Philippines.
ACS officials and staff, as well as members of their families, were treated to a half-day of manually harvesting organic cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, bunching onions and small sweet peppers. Mr. Yutuka Toba, Deputy General Manager of Semillas Takii Chile LTDA, provided a backgrounder about the farm’s history, and discussed specialized farming and harvesting techniques unique to Takii Farm. He also highlighted the crucial health benefits of consuming organic produce as opposed to their regularly farmed equivalent.
ACS officials discussed key agricultural and trade opportunities arising from the Takii Farm visit, including prospective exchanges of best practices between individual ASEAN member countries and Chile in the agricultural sector.
The Philippine Embassy has more trade and socio-cultural activities planned for the ACS until the end of its chairmanship on 31 March 2018. The ACS is composed of the embassies of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam END

(Santiago, 06 February 2018) – The Philippine Embassy, acting in its capacity as Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS), hosted and chaired the 1st ACS meeting in 2018 to highlight previous activities held under the Philippine’s chairmanship and propose prospective projects for ACS in the months of February and March 2018. The meeting was held at the Hotel Regal Pacific in Las Condes, Santiago.
Philippine Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Marcos A.S. Punsalang suggested the continuation of ACS’s political and economic activities, specifically meetings with the Chilean Federation of Industry (SOFOFA), the Chile and Santiago Chambers of Commerce, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss ongoing APEC 2019 preparations. More importantly, it was agreed that the ACS will arrange a collective courtesy call on incoming Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Roberto Ampuero.
Ambassador Philemon Arobaya of Indonesia and Ambassador Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Rameez of Malaysia, both senior members of the ACS, reiterated their full support for the Philippines’ chairmanship and proposed that social activities, such as another family day, ACS bowling and golf tournaments, likewise be scheduled during the Philippines’ tenure as chairman. Also discussed for careful consideration was the proposal to establish a Chile-ASEAN Chamber of Commerce, an emerging project under the auspices of the Chile ASEAN Council.
The ACS Meeting is the Philippines’ fourth event under its chairmanship—following informal farewells for departing ACS officers of Indonesia and Malaysia, the very successful ASEAN Community Family Day on 27 January, and the recently held ASEAN Ladies’ Breakfast held also on 6 February 2018.
The ACS is composed of the embassies of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. END
