In an effort to provide the Filipino Community in Chile with the right tools to protect themselves against common crimes in Santiago, the Philippine Embassy organized a seminar held on 12 August 2017 at OTIC at Santa Beatriz, Providencia that focused on “Personal, Home and Neighborhood Safety” with Lieutenant Mauricio Serrano of the Carabineros de Chile or the National Police of Chile as guest speaker.

Around 100 participants attended the event that sought to incorporate “security conscious” habits into daily routine in order to make an individual and his or her home less vulnerable. Participants were also reminded of basic safety rules such as staying alert in one’s surroundings and as much as possible escaping, rather than confronting, threatening situations. A demonstration of the 133 or 911 emergency police hotline was also given. A lively question and answer segment followed the presentation, during which some of the participants shared stories about their experiences of encountering crime and which practices allowed them to escape the threat.

            Chargé D’affaires, a.i. Marcos Punsalang delivered his closing remarks, during which he emphasized the need for everyone to use common sense even in a relatively safe place like Santiago, and remember crime prevention tips to increase personal safety.END

ASEAN COMMITTEE IN SANTIAGO LEADS CELEBRATION OF 50TH FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY OF ASEAN IN CHILE

The 50^th Anniversary of the founding of ASEAN was celebrated on 8 August 2017 in Santiago, Chile by the ASEAN Committee on Santiago at the Embassy of Malaysia. Vice Minister of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Edgardo Riveros, joined Ambassador of Viet Nam H.E. Ngo Duc Thang, Ambassador of Malaysia H.E. Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Rameez, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand H.E. Saroj Thanasunti, Chargé D’affaires, a.i. of the Philippines Mr. Marcos A.S. Punsalang, and Chargé D’affaires, a.i. of Indonesia Mr. Amin M. Wicaksono in the festivities.

Around 160 guests, including officials of ASEAN countries with representations in Chile and their families, officials from the Chilean Foreign Ministry and members of the diplomatic corps were on hand to celebrate the event, which was opened with a Thai welcome dance called the Ram Auay Pon. In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Rameez, who serves as the current Chairman of the ACS, highlighted the ACS’ efforts to promote ASEAN in Chile by citing the long list of ACS’ activities in the past year, which included calls on government officials, as well as cultural and sporting events. He also congratulated Chile for acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, a move seen to signal the further strengthening of relations between Chile and ASEAN.

Guests also enjoyed the Lancang Kuning, an Indonesian folk dance and traditional dishes from the five countries, including the Filipino classics pancit and lumpia. END

PH EMBASSY IN CHILE DISCUSS FILIPINO FOOD AND COOKING CULTURE; HOLD THREE-HOUR COOKING CLASS AT LO BARNECHEA CENTRO DE LAS TRADICIONES IN SANTIAGO, CHILE

Fifteen students of the Lo Barnechea Centro de las Tradiciones had a chance to cook authentic, traditional Filipino dishes during a three-hour cooking class at the Centro de las Tradiciones building in Santiago, Chile on 4 August 2017. The students were introduced by Third Secretary Raisa Mabayo to an aspect of Filipino culture through short videos and a brief discussion on the importance of food in big or small gatherings; the way certain foods are eaten—as kakanin, as pulutan, or as ulam; and what constitutes a typical meal in the Philippines. During the class, Embassy personnel Mr. Jeffry Aranda held a step-by-step demonstration on cooking the okoy, which was treated as entrée, the adobo as main dish, and the cassava cake as dessert.  

After the class, the students, all of whom were amateur cooks and food enthusiasts, tried the completed dishes. The Chileans, who generally cook their rice with salt, learned of the importance of balancing flavorful Filipino dishes, such as the adobo, with plain white rice. They also marveled at the cassava cake, a filling dessert made from a root crop instead of the usual fruit.

Chargé D’affaires, a.i. Mr. Marcos Punsalang also had a discussion with the head of the Lo Barnechea Centro de las Tradiciones on the possibility of conducting more Filipino cuisine cooking classes in the future, especially with the popularity of the event.END
