EMBASSY PARTICIPATES IN THE EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION MARKING THE NATIONAL DAY FOR MIGRANTS 2017

Santiago PE participated in the advanced filming of the Eucharistic Celebration marking the Day of the Migrants held on Saturday, 22 July 2017 at the San Ramon Parish in the Providencia district of the city. Representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, South Korea, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Haiti, India, Italy, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Republica Dominicana, Spain, Venezuela and native “chilenos” came in their national costumes.
The Mass opened with a procession led by the main celebrant, Mons. Galo Fernandez who is also the President of the Catholic Institute of Chile for Migration (INCAMI), followed by representatives from each participating country carrying their respective flags which they offered at the altar. A basketful of tropical fruits that are grown in the Philippines were offered during the Mass by two Filipinos who were among the 12 who participated in the mass. The overall mood was festive given the lively and rhythmic singing by the church choir. During the mass, prayer intentions were read in different languages; including Filipino.
Continuing economic growth and political stability have made Chile an attractive destination for migrant workers. The number of foreigners with permanent residency in Chile have doubled in the past 10 years, reaching record numbers in 2017. The Filipino Community is among those growing steadily in Chile, with about 100 arriving to the country every year since 2013.
This Eucharistic event which was filmed by the national television, TVN, will be telecast on September 3, the actual Day for Migrants.

Chargé D’affaires, ad interim Marcos Punsalang recalled the support given by one of Chilean’s founding fathers, Bernardo O’Higgins, in the Philippines’ fight for independence from Spain in his remarks to the diplomatic corps during the Embassy’s vin d'honneur for the 119th Anniversary of Philippine Independence held on 12 June 2016 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Santiago, Chile. Chargé D’affaires Punsalang also highlighted the existing cooperation between the Chile and the Philippines, including the Memorandum of Understanding on Disaster Risk Cooperation and the growing investment of Philippine company Energy Development Corporation in the geothermal fields of Chile.
About a hundred guests, including Chief of Protocol Ambassador Gloria Navarrete attended the event. It opened with the national anthems of Chile and the Philippines sung by 17-year-old soloist Francisca Diaz and a Filipino Community choir, respectively. Guests enjoyed Filipino food and a cultural performance in the form of tinikling, performed by members of the community, whose introduction served as an acknowledgment of the rapidly growing Filipino Community in Chile.END
TRADITIONAL FILIPINO FOLK DANCE CONTEST HELD IN SANTIAGO, CHILE IN CELEBRATION OF THE 119TH INDEPENDENCE DAY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Filipinos in Chile were treated to a Filipino folk dance competition during the commemoration of the 119th Philippine Independence Day celebration held on 3 June 2017 at Parroquia Italiana in Santiago, Chile. Two categories were set for the competition, with one group competing under the traditional folk dance category and the other all dancing the tinikling. Each category had seven groups each vying for the top prize.
The tinikling category was won by the Jesus is Lord group, whose four members elicited massive cheers from the crowd with their mastery of the dance. The folk dance category, meanwhile, was dominated by dancers of the Binuyugan. Other performers under the folk dance category performed the Dayang-Dayang, Singkil, and Cariñosa. END
FILIPINOS IN CHILE HOLD A SALU-SALO FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY 2017

In celebration of the 119th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence, the Filipino Community in Chile led the festivities in Santiago with a Filipino food salu-salo and by holding a Philippine traditional dance contest at the Parroquia Italiana on 3 June 2017. More than 200 Filipinos living in Chile, along with their friends and family, participated in the event.
Philippine Embassy Chargé D’Affaires, a.i. Mr. Marcos Punsalang delivered his opening remarks in line with the Kalayaan 2017 theme, Pagbabagong, Samasamang, Balikatin by highlighting the need to nurture the growing Filipino community by looking out for one another and strengthening ties with the local community.
The event was organized by the community, led by the designated Filipino Community coordinators, whose chief task is to check on Filipinos in times of crises and to encourage newly-arrived Filipino workers to register at the Embassy. The number of Filipinos in Chile has been steadily rising since 2013, with the population growing from about a hundred to 600 in a span of 4 years. Most have found work as household workers in a country that shares a Catholic, Hispanic heritage with the Philippines and also continues to enact labor-friendly policies that protect migrant workers.END
