(Santiago, 30 December 2018) – The Philippine Embassy in Santiago commemorated the 122nd Martyrdom Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Plaza Filipinas in Las Condes.
In his yearly speech, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Marcos A.S. Punsalang reminded officials, staff and family members of the Embassy to always recall and celebrate the fundamental freedoms and inalienable rights Filipinos now enjoy, thanks to the ultimate sacrifice of their national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
The Rizal bust in Plaza Filipinas was inaugurated on 18 May 1989. The Embassy and the Municipality of Las Condes added a plaque detailing Rizal’s life, achievements and heroism in June 2016.
To this day, Rizal remains a popular historical figure among Chilean youth and members of the academe. END

(Santiago, 15 December 2018) – The Philippine Embassy in Chile organized a special Christmas event, entitled “Pasko sa Santiago 2018”, and sponsored three Christmas-themed competitions for more than 300 Filipino attendees on 15 December 2018.
Pasko sa Santiago 2018 was held at the Parroquia Italiana in Providencia in close coordination with leaders and volunteers from the Filipino community in Chile.
In his yearly speech to celebrate Christmas and end the year, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Marcos A.S. Punsalang once again emphasized the importance of holding annual Christmas events to unite the small but fast-growing community of Filipinos in Chile, as well as to showcase Filipino talent, culture and creativity.
He also availed of the opportunity to thank the Embassy’s staff-members and Filipino community leaders for their invaluable contributions in all of the Embassy’s projects and activities in 2018.
Three Christmas-themed competitions—a Christmas Caroling Contest, a Group Dance Contest and a Parol-making Contest—served as highlights of the day-long event.
A long-established Filipino community organization, The Rookies, won the grand prize in the Christmas Caroling Contest with their version of beloved English and Filipino Christmas songs.
The Twinklers, also composed of Filipino longtimers in Chile, won the grand prize in the Group Dance Contest with their dance rendition of Jingle Bell Rock, as well as the grand prize in the Parol-making Contest for their 3D swinging parol.
Pasko sa Santiago is one of three major events held annually by the Philippine Embassy in Chile—along with Independence Day activities for the diplomatic corps and the Filipino community held every June. END

The Philippine Embassy entertains inquiries by Chilean businessmen and importers
(Santiago, 14 December 2018) – The Philippine Embassy in Chile showcased Filipino products and presented trade and investment opportunities at the Asia Pacific Workshop held at the Icon Hotel on 14 December 2018.
The Asia Pacific Workshop is an annual activity organized by the Asia Pacific Chamber of Commerce and the Chilean government to connect local businesses and importers with foreign embassies and their trade offices in Chile.
This year’s theme “Business Opportunities in the APEC-Chile 2019” also served as Chile’s launching to the business community of its four APEC thematic priorities: a) Women, SMEs and Inclusive Growth; b) Integration 4.0; c) Digital Society; and, d) Sustainable Growth. These priorities were introduced by no less than former Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle and APEC-Chile Executive Secretary Paulina Nazal.
The Philippine Embassy distributed trade and investment materials from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as well as tourism flyers and booklets featuring Cebu and Bohol. The Embassy also entertained trade and investment inquiries from prospective South American importers and investors.
The Embassy’s showcase of Mama Sita’s sauces and mixes was a favorite among participating business owners and investors. Mr. Francisco Contreras of the Chilean company Sr. Masala, local distributor of Mama Sita’s, assisted the Embassy in promoting the popular Filipino brand and its large variety of offerings soon to be widely available in the Chilean market.
The Philippine booth also featured traditional Filipino products, such as handwoven table runners, mother of pearl products, wooden handicrafts, bags, and other examples of fine Filipino craftsmanship.
This is the Philippine Embassy’s fourth participation in the annual Asia Pacific Workshop. END
PHILIPPINE EMBASSY WINS IN ASEAN BOWLING TOURNAMENT

(Santiago, 18 October 2018) – The ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS) composed of the embassies of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam competed in a friendly bowling tournament on October 18 at the Aventura Center in Florida Mall, Vespucio, Santiago.
The event also served as an afternoon of camaraderie and enjoyment for officers, staff and members of their families, while at the same time continuing to strengthen their bond as one ASEAN family in Chile.
Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Marcos A.S. Punsalang, won the Heads of Post Individual Category, while Consul Dennis John Briones and Philippine Embassy local hire, Ms. Viviana Pernia, similarly brought home major prizes in the Male and Female Individual Categories.
The successful event was organized by the Vietnamese Embassy, which also serves as the current Chair of the ACS. Vietnam is due to turn over the said chairmanship to Indonesia in November 2018. END
