(8 August 2022, Santiago) The ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS), under the Chairmanship of the Philippines, hosted a diplomatic reception in celebration of the 55th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the Philippine Embassy Chancery in Las Condes. The Guest of Honor was International Economic Affairs Deputy Minister Jose Miguel Ahumada, representing Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola.
In his remarks, Philippine Embassy Chargé d’Affaires and current ACS Chair Jim Tito B. San Agustin highlighted the major milestones in ASEAN’s 55-year history towards creating a highly connected region, including the forging of the Bali Concord in 2003, the ASEAN Charter in 2008 and the ASEAN Community in 2015. He also cited the recent developments in ASEAN’s development partnership with Chile, which has seen three ASEAN-Chile Development Partnership (AC-DPC) meetings since 2020, and sustained activities in such areas as trade and investment, maritime cooperation, disaster risk reduction and MSMEs.
For his part, Deputy Minister Ahumada reiterated Chile’s resolve to engage ASEAN multilaterally and bilaterally as the regional body’s first development partner in Latin America, particularly in the areas of trade and investment.
All five ASEAN Member States with resident embassies in Santiago set up a booth of cultural exhibits, and served classic ASEAN dishes and desserts, including Indonesia’s Bakso, Malaysia’s Mee Kari Nyonya, Thailand’s Braised Chicken Soup, and Vietnam’s Pho. The Philippines had a Pahiyas-inspired booth and served Lumpiang Shanghai, Adobong Manok, Pancit Guisado and Sapin-Sapin, prepared by the Embassy’s Cultural Officer.
The second part of the program involved cultural performances from the Philippines and Thailand. The Philippine performances included Sakuting and Pandanggo sa Ilaw by members of the Filipino Community, and a Kali demonstration by Chilean Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) enthusiasts. Thailand had a Muay Thai demonstration.
Incidentally, the Sakuting was performed by members of the Filipino Community who participated in the “Move With Pinas” Interactive cultural workshop of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) held last month.
The Los Rios Region of Chile, which hosted ASEAN Week in 2019, also participated in the festivities with its own booth providing a generous sampling of its local beer, cheese and other regional delicacies.END
