PHILIPPINE EMBASSY CAPS SUCCESSFUL ACS CHAIRMANSHIP WITH FUN-FILLED ASEAN FAMILY DAY
- Details
(Santiago, 31 January 2023) The Philippine Embassy in Chile, as outgoing Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS), capped its 6-month-long Chairmanship by organizing an ASEAN Family Day and ACS Chairmanship Turnover Ceremony held at the Laguna Esmeralda, commune of Melipilla. The activity brought together 76 ASEAN heads of posts, officials, personnel and members of their families in a highly successful day-long event filled with classic Southeast Asian dishes, games and prizes, especially for young children.
In his remarks to officially start the activity, Philippine Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Jim Tito San Agustin recalled activities held under the Philippine Embassy’s 6-month ACS Chairmanship, namely: the celebration of the 55th ASEAN Day at the Philippine Chancery; ACS’s participation in the Feria Internacional de Santiago (FISA); the ACS and SOFOFA (Federation of Chilean Industries) Business Luncheon; and the aforementioned ASEAN Family Day and ACS Chairmanship Turnover Ceremony. He also thanked the Ambassadors and Working Group Members of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam for their full support throughout the Philippines’ ACS Chairmanship.
To promote and foster camaraderie between ACS in the spirit of team sports, Consul Dennis John Briones, Cultural Officer Brian Bustamante along with other ACS Working Group Members facilitated fun-filled games for both adults and kids to enjoy, including ASEAN-themed piñatas, egg-tossing contests, non-alcoholic beer pong, sack race, circular tag as well as spoon and marble relay races. Major and minor prizes were given out to winning contestants ranging from sweet treats, school supplies, toys to fancy electronics and gadgets.
The recently held ASEAN Family Day and ACS Chairmanship Turnover Ceremony was the first post-pandemic outdoor leisure activity successfully conducted for ACS officials and members of their families in Chile. The last ASEAN Family Day was held all the way back in January 2018 likewise under the Philippines’ Chairmanship.
Current ACS Chair, Vietnam, will be chairing the Committee until the end of July 2023. END
ACS AND CHILE’S SOFOFA DISCUSS REINVIGORATION OF BILATERAL AND REGIONAL TRADE IN A POST-PANDEMIC HORIZON

(Santiago, 13 December 2022) In its capacity as Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS), the Philippine Embassy, represented by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Jim Tito B. San Agustin, led the ACS (PHL, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam) in discussions with Chile’s SOFOFA on the reinvigoration of bilateral and regional trade under a post-pandemic horizon. SOFOFA or Sociedad de Fomento Fabril is Chile’s main industry and manufacturing promotion arm, representing no less than 22 business associations and more than 4,000 companies and stakeholders from all across the country’s regions.
The business luncheon was initiated by SOFOFA President Richard Von Appen alongside Co-SOFOFA President for Business Councils Juan Eduardo Errazuriz and other SOFOFA officials and partners. Also in attendance were the Business Council Representatives and Trade Attachés of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
CDA San Agustin highlighted the Philippines’ commitment to continue its close partnership with SOFOFA and to maximize trade and investment engagements between the two countries under the PHL-Chile MOU on the Establishment of a Joint Economic Cooperation or JEC. SOFOFA, for its part, emphasized that Chile is keenly awaiting the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the Philippines and Chile—similar to those already being enjoyed by other ACS members. They mentioned, as a promising example, that Chilean meat exporters are in fact already regularly exporting one reefer container of pork and chicken to the Philippines on a daily basis. It is expected that a signed FTA would further increase two-way trade volume on a variety of consumer products, as well as facilitate familiarity and investment between the two countries.
As members of SOFOFA include the top renewable industries of Chile, CDA San Agustin also provided a briefing on Philippine investments in Chile’s geothermal energy sector, specifically that of the Energy Development Corporation or EDC.
On a broader bloc-to-bloc perspective, both ACS and SOFOFA equally expressed their hope for closer partnership and continuing engagement between ASEAN and the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru) under the ambit of the ASEAN-PA Framework of Cooperation.
The ACS closed the meeting by handing over a special basket of assorted Philippine, Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese food products and snacks to SOFOFA President Von Appel.
The Philippine Embassy is scheduled to turn over the Chairmanship of ACS to the Embassy of Vietnam during the ASEAN Family Day earmarked for the last week of January 2023. END

Philippine Embassy officials and the Filipino community welcome and cheer for the PHL women’s national foorball team at the Estadio Municipal de la Pintana
(Santiago, 15 November 2022) The Philippine Embassy in Santiago, Chile, led by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Jim Tito B. San Agustin, joined by Consul Dennis John C. Briones, Embassy attachés, Chilean local hires and members of the Filipino community in Chile came out in droves and cheered for the Philippine women’s national football team in a valiant effort against Chile in friendlies held at the Estadio Municipal de la Pintana in Santiago.
The Philippine team, despite being undermanned from two early yellow cards, kept the Chilean team to just one point in an exciting and aggressive match-up, but failed to make their own goal ending the game 0-1 favoring Chile. The two teams also met earlier and battled to a draw in an equally exciting match held at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar on 12 November 2022. Despite the 2nd match loss, the Philippine team proudly displayed the same championship pedigree which won them the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship earlier this year and held their ground against a much-higher ranked Chilean team.
In pre and post-game interviews, Philippine Embassy Chargé d’ Affaires, a.i., San Agustin underscored the Embassy’s and the Filipino community’s shared pride and elation to welcome the Philippine women’s team in their first-ever visit to Chile as ambassadors of friendly competition and sports. END
